Situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in Northern Kartanaka, India has a world heritage site called HAMPI – Once being the richest and largest cities in the world, today stands out for its sheer splendor in the ruins.
Surrounded by Tungabhadra river on one side and hills on the other three, climbing to the top of any of them gives you a spectacular aerial view of the city & its temples.
Watching sunrise and sunset from atop the hills is truly magical which we didn’t want to miss out. So, on our last day at Hampi which was the 4th day of our trip, we decided to watch the sunrise from one of the sunrise points in Hampi – The Malyawantha Raghunatha Hill.

Hampi Sunrise at Malyavanta Hill
The Malyavanta hill is one of the few hilltops in Hampi where one can reach by a vehicle. A good news for those who find it difficult to hike.
A 10 minutes drive from Hampi Heritage & Wilderness Resort lead us to the foothiils of the Malyavanta Hill. One of the highlights of this hill includes a large temple known as Malayavanta Raghunatha Temple , dedicated to lord Ram.
A group of pujaris continuously chant chaupais from Shri Ramcharitmanas written by Goswami Tulsidas ji hundredes of years ago.
Chanting Ramcharitmanas chaupais can get you rid of many problems in life, be it wealth or health and leads to spiritual growth.
The continuous chantings had made the ambiance very positive and one could feel the energy & spiritual bliss.
A short hike from inside the temple complex lead us to the hill top. Since, it was still dark we couldn’t see anything except the Ram temple. We soon saw the sky lighting up slowly over to the east. Watching the colors in the sky fade from bright pink and orange to a light blue was beautiful and amazing.
Watching the sun raising from atop the Malyavanta hills through the boulder-laden hills of Hampi at a distance is truly an amazing experience and should not be missed.
Matunga Hill & Hemakuta Hill are the other 2 hills that offer spectacular sunrise and set views.
Besides a couple of tourists, There were other early risers who joined us over the hilltop – A number of resident monkeys who were as curious to watch the sunrise as we were. After having spent some time enjoying the views of the unobstructed view of the westward landscape we made our way back to the resort.
Watching the sunrise from the Malyavanta Raghunath Hills was one of the many amazing experiences that made our Hampi visit a memorable one.
